What Can You Laser Engrave? A Guide for Businesses

If you have ever looked at a product and wondered, "Could I have my company logo engraved on that?", the answer may well be yes, but not everything can or should be laser engraved.

One of the common misconceptions I come across at EngravePro Solutions is that a laser can engrave absolutely anything, in any size and even in full colour. In reality, the material, dimensions, surface and the result you are hoping to achieve all need to be considered before an item goes anywhere near the laser.

That doesn't mean you need to know anything about laser engraving before contacting me. In fact, if you have an idea but aren't sure whether it is possible, I'm always happy to have a conversation about it.

What Types of Products Can Businesses Have Laser Engraved?

The variety is probably greater than you might expect.

I've been asked to engrave everything from tumblers, travel coffee mugs, milk jugs and cocktail shakers to wooden boards, bookmarks, wooden and metal keyrings, slate plaques and coasters.

And these aren't necessarily products being purchased simply as corporate gifts.

Businesses use laser engraving in many different ways.

I've worked with a coffee shop and a private chef, engraved wooden candle lids for a candle maker, and worked with a wooden board maker who wanted his products professionally engraved.

I've also produced metal recognition badges personalised with individual names.

One particularly interesting project involved an Airbnb owner who wanted to elevate the presentation of their holiday property. We created a slate house plaque featuring their logo along with matching engraved slate coasters, helping to carry their branding through the property.

These are all very different businesses with very different requirements, but engraving gave each of them an opportunity to put their own identity onto a physical product.

Can I Supply My Own Products for Engraving?

Absolutely.

At EngravePro Solutions, I can engrave products supplied by you as well as products I supply myself.

If you already have the tumblers, boards, keyrings or other products you want branded, you don't necessarily need to replace them with something from a predetermined catalogue just to have them engraved.

However, I will need to establish exactly what the product is made from and check its dimensions before agreeing to the work.

This is important.

I don't like turning work away, but I also won't accept a job if I don't believe I can engrave it to the standard I expect from EngravePro Solutions.

My machines have physical size limitations, and some materials may not be suitable for laser engraving. Certain plastics, for example, need to be properly identified before I will agree to engrave them.

If you don't know what a product is made from, that's not necessarily the end of the conversation. Let me see the product or send me the information you have and we can establish whether it is something I can work with.

Can Anything Be Laser Engraved?

No, and this is probably one of the most important things to understand before commissioning laser engraving.

Laser engraving is incredibly versatile, but it isn't magic.

Different materials react differently to a laser. The size and shape of the product can affect whether it can physically be accommodated, and the finish you see on one material won't necessarily be the same on another.

This is one reason I won't simply say yes to an engraving job without first understanding what the product is.

I'd much rather have a conversation with a customer, inspect the information and occasionally have to say that something isn't suitable than accept a job that I can't complete to the best possible standard.

Does Laser Engraving Produce Colour?

This is another misconception I encounter.

Customers sometimes expect a laser engraved logo to reproduce the colours they see in their original company branding.

Laser engraving and full colour printing or vinyl graphics are different processes.

For me, one of the major advantages of engraving is the finish. It can give a product a permanent, premium and luxurious appearance that feels very different from applying a sticker.

But that doesn't mean engraving is automatically the correct choice for every project.

If reproducing the colours within your company logo is critical to what you're trying to achieve, vinyl, stickers or another printing method may be more appropriate.

If permanence, texture and a high end appearance are the priority, engraving can be an excellent option.

The right choice depends on what you want the finished product to achieve.

What Type of Logo File Do I Need for Laser Engraving?

Good engraving starts long before I switch the laser on.

The quality of the artwork matters.

Where possible, a clean, clear vector, SVG or high quality PNG file gives me the best starting point for your company logo.

That doesn't mean I simply load the file into the machine and press a button.

Artwork still needs to be prepared for engraving. This can include removing backgrounds, cleaning up the design and preparing it specifically for the product being engraved.

The preparation stage is an important part of achieving a clean, sharp finished result.

Do I Need to Order Hundreds of Items?

No.

There is no such thing as an order that is too small simply because of quantity.

I'm just as happy engraving a single timeless piece for a customer as I am engraving 500 slate coasters for a company wanting to thank its employees.

A small business might only need one professionally branded item. Another company might need hundreds.

Both deserve the same attention to detail.

The important questions are whether the product is suitable, whether I can achieve the required result and whether the project can be completed within the required timescale.

What Happens When You Ask EngravePro Solutions to Engrave Your Products?

If you contacted me and said, for example, that you had 25 stainless steel tumblers and wanted your company logo engraved onto them, I wouldn't expect you to know all the technical details.

My first step would normally be to ask you to send me a link or photograph of the product along with your logo.

I'll assess the product and artwork and, once I'm satisfied that the project is suitable, provide you with a quotation and a link to pay should you wish to proceed.

For some projects, I may ask whether you have one or two additional products available for testing.

Testing allows me to refine the laser settings and establish the best possible result before working through the main order. If additional products aren't available, I'll find something I already have that is as close as possible to the material and use that to establish my settings.

I can also provide a digital proof showing how the engraving is expected to look and where it will be positioned.

Interestingly, I find that many customers are happy to leave that part to me and trust me to get on with the job.

Once everything is completed and checked, the finished items are carefully boxed and posted back out.

What Does a Good Laser Engraving Look Like?

There are several things I'm looking at before an engraved product leaves EngravePro Solutions.

The detail needs to be clean and sharp. The engraving needs to be correctly positioned and aligned. The finish needs to be appropriate for the material, and when I'm producing a batch, I want consistency across the entire order.

I'm also checking the product itself to ensure I'm happy with its overall presentation.

Preparation and testing mean that I'm usually confident about the result before the laser even begins engraving, but natural materials can occasionally have other ideas.

Wood is a good example.

Quality wood naturally contains variations in grain, shade and character. These aren't necessarily defects, they're part of what makes each piece different.

I've previously used a replacement from my own stock and engraved a piece again because the grain in a particular piece of wood meant the first result didn't meet the standard I wanted.

Natural variation can mean that two engraved wooden products don't look completely identical. For a one off gift or keepsake, that individuality can actually be part of its appeal. You're getting something with its own natural character rather than an entirely uniform, mass produced surface.

Why Choose Laser Engraving for Your Business?

For me, the biggest attractions are permanence and presentation.

There is something about a properly engraved logo that gives a product a premium feel.

Whether it's your logo on a coffee shop's equipment, branding on a product you manufacture, a name on an employee recognition badge or matching branded pieces throughout a holiday property, engraving becomes part of the item itself rather than something simply applied to the surface.

That can help turn an everyday product into something that feels considered, professional and distinctly yours.

It won't be the right solution for every product or every design, and I'll tell you if I don't think it is.

But when the material, artwork and application are right, laser engraving can produce a distinctive, professional finish that is designed to last.
